My art has signified different things at different times to me. Upon reflection, I see and recognize different sources that swirl back and forth, and around, in the realm of my consciousness, of my reality, and my subconscious. Among the forces that shape me are a deep colonial and misogynist history, the awakening of my gender, and the emergence of my queerness. When I visualize the past and the present, the future becomes more complex, but also full of possibilities. These days I feel a sense of humility through my art; it is a privilege to create, and a gift the capture the gaze of people around me. The loss of life due to the pandemic and the loss of our humanity evidenced by children in cages, are enough to leave you hollow—but when I make art, then there is hope and an opportunity to care for loved ones, to share, and to love. My art right at this moment bears witness.
